Chinese herbs for mouth and tongue sores

The information I present here is based solely on my clinical experience. Always consult an NCCAOM certified herbologist who will give you a proper diagnosis and guide to obtain herbal products that are safe and effective. Do not experiment based on what you read here or in any media.

Mouth and tongue sores are not a serious problem... except while you are suffering from them. The lascerating, parched, burning pain can be hellish - well, the tissues are actually being torn apart. It can impede eating and speech. It can make you hate everybody and even the whole world. Drugs may bring temporary relief but then you have to take drugs. A Chinese herbal formula is very effective not only in relieving the pain but treating the problem at a deeper level.

The formula is White Tiger Decoction (Bai Hu Tang) from Zhang Zhong Jing's classic 'On Cold Damage', a 3rd century C.E. text that is the wellspring of Chinese herbal medicine. The formula consists of four ingredients: Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Zhi Gan Cao (Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae Praeparata cum Melle) and Geng Mi (Semen Oryzae). It should come as no surprise that it can treat mouth and tongue sores because the formula is indicated for Yangming channel heat. Yangming is a channel in the Six Channels system that includes the Stomach and Large Intestine channels. The Stomach channel travels to the mouth and the tongue. Bai Hu Tang treats excess heat in the Yangming channel with damage to body fluids. Yes, you can feel it: the tissues being scorched and parched till they split apart. The most effective way to take Bai Hu Tang for mouth and tongue sores is in liquid form (you can use granules or cut up capsules and dissolve the contents in water). Let it swish around in the mouth for a minute before swallowing it. That way the medicine is delivered to the affected tissues and the relief can be immediate.
